Types of Low-E Glass

01

Hard Coated Low-E Glass

Hard-coated Low-E glass, also known as in-line Low-E, is made using a pyrolysis process to produce a pyrolytic coating. This fusion creates a strong bond or "hard coat" that is extremely durable.

02

Low-e Glass Panels

Low-E glass panels is a coated glass that uses magnetron sputtering to coat one or more layers of metal or compound film on high-quality float glass.

03

Double Pane Low-e Glass

In winter, the purpose of the coating is to reflect heat back into the building to prevent heat loss and keep the indoor climate at a balanced temperature.

Environmental Benefits

By reducing the need for heating and air conditioning, Low-E glass also lowers greenhouse gas emissions and your home’s overall carbon footprint, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

Increased Comfort

Homes with Low-E glass experience fewer hot and cold spots, which creates a more comfortable indoor environment throughout the year.

Potential Increase in Home Value

Because of its energy efficiency and the benefits it provides, installing Low-E glass can also potentially increase the value of your home.

Reduced UV Exposure

Low-E glass reduces the amount of ultraviolet (UV) light that enters your home. This protection helps prevent furniture, carpets, and curtains from fading due to sun exposure, extending the life of your interior furnishings.

Better Sound Insulation

Low-E glass can provide better sound insulation than traditional windows. The special coating on the surface of the glass, along with the insulating gas between the panes, can help to reduce the transmission of sound through the window.

Application of Low-E Glass

Energy-Efficient Window

Low-E glass is widely used in energy-efficient windows to reduce heat loss during the winter and minimize heat gain during the summer.

01

Skylights and Roof Glazing

Low-E glass is used in skylights and roof glazing systems to maximize daylighting while minimizing heat transfer.

02

Curtain Walls and Facades

Low-E glass is employed in curtain walls and building facades to enhance thermal performance and energy efficiency.

03

Conservatories and Greenhouses

Low-E glass is utilized in conservatories and greenhouses to create optimal growing conditions for plants while minimizing heat loss.

04

Interior Partitions and Doors

Low-E glass is used in interior partitions and doors to enhance energy efficiency and create visual connectivity between different spaces.

How Low-E Glass Is Made

There are two main methods of manufacture for low-e glass:

(3)

Hard coat
Also known as pyrolytic coating, are most commonly used in commercial buildings.
The coating is applied directly to the surface of the glass ribbon while it is still in a molten state during the manufacturing process. The 'hard coating' is fused to the glass surface, which makes it more durable for glass processing and the sheets are cut into size after the coating has been applied. It's generally used where durability is needed in high levels of exposure to wind, rain, and other weather conditions.

Soft coat
Also known as magnetron sputtering vacuum deposition (MSVD), it is most commonly used for domestic windows. The soft coat is applied to pre-cut sheets of glass in a vacuum chamber at room temperature. Metal oxides are applied in a microscopically thin layer to standard glass via a magnetically enhanced cathodic sputtering process. Because the coating is not bonded to the glass it's applied to the internal panes of double-glazed and triple-glazed units to avoid damage.

Measuring Low-E Glass Performance

When determining the Low-E glass thermal performance, a couple of metrics are measured.

U-Value and R-Value: The U-Value measures the rate of heat transfer and indicates how well the window insulates. The numbers range from 0.25 – 1.25, and the lower the number, the better it performs at keeping heat inside. In relation to the U-value, the R-value is used to measure the product’s resistance to heat transfer. The R-value is calculated by finding the reciprocal of the U-value (R-value = 1/U). Lower U-Values will always correspond with higher R-Values and vice versa.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient: The solar heat gain coefficient measures how well a product resists solar heat gain. This number ranges from a scale of 0-1 and the lower the number, the better a product is at resisting solar heat. Lower numbers also generally correlate with lower costs when cooling your home.

Visible Light Transmittance: Visible light transmittance measures how much visible light your product allows into the home. This number ranges from 0-1 and the higher the number, the more visible light is transmitted. High visible light transmittance can reduce the need for artificial lighting.

FAQ

Q: What is low-E glass?

A: The “E” in low-E glass stands for emissivity, or the amount of energy radiated from a surface. Emissivity is measured from 0 to 1, with 0 being a reflective mirror and 1 being a fully blacked-out surface.

Q: Is it worth getting low-E glass?

A: Yes, the cost of low-E glass is a few dollars more than standard glass. Nonetheless, the small extra fee will easily be offset by the benefits offered by it.

Q: How does a low-E glass work?

A: Low-E glass avoids heat loss during the winter months and maintains cooling during the summer months inside the house. Hence, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions of the house and makes a building environmentally friendly.

Q: How do i know if i already have low-E glass?

A: To see if a window has low-E glass, perform the following test:
Light a match or use a small flashlight and hold it close to the window. If you have a double-paned window, you'll see four reflections of light or flame because of the window's four glass surfaces (or two reflections for each pane of glass).
When low E glass is present, one of these reflections will show a different color compared to the others.
Without low E glass, all four reflected images will be the same color.

Q: Does it perform in different season/climate?

A: During the summer, this reflective coat sends heat back into the atmosphere instead of allowing it to enter into the home via the glass. During the winter, the reflective coat sends heat back into the home to keep the interior of the house comfortable. This innovative coating, along with the space between the panes of glass, serves as an excellent insulator for residential homes.

Q: How long do Low-E glass last?

A: Windows coated in Low-E glass can last anywhere from 10-15 years. Of course, proper maintenance can add years to the lifetime of your windows. We also find that the effectiveness of hard-coat Low-E glass lasts longer in most climates.

Q: Which is better, Low-E or double-pane glass?

A: Low-E glass is better than double-pane glass when it comes to energy efficiency. However, both types of glass have their merits depending on what you want in your home. Double-pane glass still provides more insulation and better energy efficiency than single pane glass without dipping into the higher pricing of Low-E. Do note that double- and triple-pane glass can also come with Low-E coating for even greater benefits.

Q: Is Low-E glass single- or double-pane?

A: Modern Low-E glass is almost exclusively double-pane, which helps increase the durability and lifespan of the soft-coat Low-E coatings. However single-pane options are available for anyone looking to make a historical home more energy efficient. If you want to apply Low-E to a single pane window, we highly advise consulting with an expert.

As one of the leading low-e glass manufacturers and suppliers in China, we warmly welcome you to buy high-grade low-e glass for sale here from our factory. All glass products are with high quality and competitive price.
