Colored Float Glass

 

Colored float glass is produced by adding metal oxides during the float glass production process. The most common colors are gray, bronze, green and blue. In addition to its function in an aesthetic sense, colored float is designed primarily to reduce solar heat gain, UV rays and glare within the building.

Colored float glass achieves its properties by absorbing solar energy, so it is sometimes called heat-absorbing glass. This heat-absorbing quality means that the glass is thermally stressed, so some thicker or darker products may need plasticization to avoid damage from thermal stress.

Another production process is the same as clear float glass produced by heating silica sand, soda ash, dolomite, limestone, salt cake, etc. Other materials can be used as colorants, refining agents or to adjust the physical and chemical properties of the glass, and then placed in a furnace heated to about 1500℃ in controlled proportions with appropriate particles. The ordinary flat glass furnace is 9 meters wide and 45 meters long, and contains more than 1200 tons of glass. Once melted, the temperature of the glass stabilizes to about 1200℃ to ensure uniform gravity. The molten glass is poured from the furnace and floats evenly on a bed of molten tin. Color Float can be processed into heat-strengthened, plasticized, laminated, bent glass and insulating glass.
